Has anybody looked at rechipping the Electrical Power Steering (EPS) on the new si? The assist is variable by speed, but pretty much set too high throughout the range. I'd buy a rechip kit that had less assist overall, but what would be really great would be one that let me dial in and save settings.
The stock si is set up with the assist decreasing some amount every 5 mph. I would set mine up with about 25% less assist at 0-5 mph, then cut it rather quickly at increasing speeds.

Variable assist power steering has been used on the hydraulic control at the final drive gears for years on vehicles like the Gen 2 integra and the 90+ accord and the 92+ prelude.
The electronic assist power steering has been used in the NSX since it first came out on the A/T models and the 95+ models in exception to the 99 zanardi edition and the rest of the worlds Type-S and the Type-R models. The 91-94 models utilized three control units and the diagnosis of the system was so complex that the dealers had to borrow a very seldom used special tool from honda in order to diagnose this system. The 95+ system utilized a single control unit w/ diagnosis built in and had the provisions of comunication thru the OBD-2 port much like the 03+Si does.
Modifing this may result in a loss of vehicle control or the EPS unit to attempt to over correct what is being done. I'm not so sure as to how you may accomplish this type of modification w/o causing further problems. The models that utilized power steering hydraulic assist control had their power steering progressively reduced as the vehicle approched 30mph and 31+ had no assist available. The only drawback of it was that the powersteering still had fuild being pumped ( which they could had installed an electronic clutch like the A/C does) but had no pressure so the engine didn't really have a whole lot of parasitic drag on it.

It would certainly be too bad if this were the case. I understood that the EPS varied assist in 5 mph increments up to about 60 mph (obviously with significant assist still present even at speed). I had hoped that the program might be simple enought that the percentage of assist could be just changed for each increment.Modifing this may result in a loss of vehicle control or the EPS unit to attempt to over correct what is being done.
From what you say though, it sounds like there must be some complexities to the program, like error trapping that might conflict with altered values because it would assume the original values. That would be unfortunate if true, both because I couldn't get the mod I want (
Unassisted steering effort is way to high in this car, and I'm not sure I would want to cut it out altogether anyway, but the assist really does reduce feedback a lot. I'm surprised that more people aren't commenting on this. It is one of only five things that I am disappointed about with the si:
1) Steering assist.
2) Wheel size. (Needs 17s)
3) Steering wheel interferes with sight line to instruments.
4) Heavy post on left side of windshield compromises vision in hard left turns.
5) A/C does not turn off when heat setting is moved off defroster settings.
