A question from over the pond...

Post by stanwan »

Hi there. I live in the UK and have Civic Type R EP3 (K20A2) with mugen CAI. Have you had any expereince in reflashing ECUs from this region, as i am aware of your work on the RSX-S. WE are lucky enough to have access to 97RON fuel (and i don't mind getting cans of booster). Hell if i need JDM pistons i'll grab a set of them too

Can't wait to get this ECU posted to you :)

Call us. We're trying out the re-flash we have here in a local European vehicle, but would like to try it in a few other cars. The octane here is measured using the average of MON and RON, so 97 RON is about 92 or 93 on the US scale. However, the fuel here seems to perform poorly when it comes to pinging so you should be better off than the US (my stock 9.2:1 compression engine pings badly on about every 10th tank of gas, and there is a significant difference from summer to winter gas).

Is your fuel really that bad :(
Thanks for the info btw, keep us all informed about the progress of your euro EP3 and how well it fares with your tuning. Are you going to setup any european agents to offer your services...

The pistons I would recommend to you would be the K20A ITR from Japan. These babies have a CR of 11.5:1. The P/N prefix is a PRC. The valvetrain and intake manifold is also different so changing over these items should get you some gains.

However I have to admit that this engine is fairly difficult to work on in comparision to the B-series engines. Removal of the head requires the removal of the of the chain, chain guides, chain tensioner, chain case cover, crank pulley and a lot of other stuff. To eplace pistons I would recommend you remove the engine and then complete the work with the car out of the way.

Joe.
