Viewing Files Without ECU

I apologize if this is common knowledge, I did a search on here (and google) and was unable to find an answer. I'm brand new to Hondata, all of my previous "tuning" was through a VAFC2. I was wondering, do you absolutely need to have an ECU hooked up to the laptop to view an S300 file? I was hoping if I wanted to just view a file and see its contents, I wouldnt need to have an ECU hooked up, but I keep getting an error message.

You do not have to be connected to anything to view a file.
