Aloha! Just got FlashPro for my 2008 SI, any tips or help?
Re: Aloha! Just got FlashPro for my 2008 SI, any tips or help?
Hey! Here's the datalogs. Got quite a bit. I did send it to another tuner to get a second opinion as well and he said in his opinion timing is to advanced? Not sure what that means but just relaying the information. I know you are not done, but just wanted to let you know what they said.
Here's the logs. Car feels strong!!!!

Re: Aloha! Just got FlashPro for my 2008 SI, any tips or help?
So I guess my first question is when was the last time you got gas? I'm curious because we haven't have any knock in third gear for quite some time, and now we have some.
I guess I don't know how much backstory you gave the other tuner, or what datalogs you sent him, but if he thinks it has too much timing then I would probably have you yield to him moving forward. I don't want to you have to feel like you need to second guess everything. You might have him put together a package for you and see how it goes. It would be interesting to see what he comes up with and how it works on your car.

Hey man! I had to fill up gas this morning. It's from the same gas station and the same octane. I still am trying to learn about all this. Does the gas change things every time I fill up?
I was reading over my thread here, trying to learn and take all the information in and noticed you said take everything online with a grain of salt, even with what you say. I don't feel like I am second guessing everything, I just do not know anything about all of this and ask a lot of questions lol.
I like what you have been doing with the car and appreciate all the help and work! I do want to continue the process with you. I was just relaying the information, but have no idea what it even means lol. Thanks again bro!

Re: Aloha! Just got FlashPro for my 2008 SI, any tips or help?
Generally when we go from no knock at all, to a lot of odd knock out of the blue, generally speaking in my experience there has been a new fuel fill up that resulted in less than advertised octane or quality. Advertised octane or lower quality fuel happens and that is why Honda builds the knock control system to try to learn the octane of the fuel in the tank to pull timing as needed. So from my experience, when knock like this happens in an area we haven't had knock for quite a few datalogs, it's usually fuel related. One guy let his GF or wife borrow the car once, she filled up with instead of 93, which of course resulted in knock. Not saying you didn't grab the right fuel, I'm just curious as to the quality or octane is all. We've been working on it for three weeks now, ten days of that on the speed density tune, then odd knock out of the blue, might first question is what changed you know.
No problem, yeah I always say to take everything with a grain of salt. Did you send datalogs and calibrations to this other tuner, or did you just explain the knock and his reply was too much timing? Our calibrations have 5* less ignition than OEM in the area of knock, and 4* less ignition than Hondata basemaps have. The timing where you had knock in those datalogs is the same ignition I run on almost all 8th gens with no knock issue. The tables are set up for 91 octane to get guys going, then if need be we can add some for 93 octane. But my main thing is, if the other tuner didn't look at datalogs, then it's frustrating that he would just say it's too much timing. When I have people come to me with issues, either tuned by someone else or just having a problem, my first thing is to have them send me a datalog and the calibration they're running on so I can see what is going on and how things are set up.
I don't mind continuing to help you, I just have to look things over some more before getting the next file to you. I don't want to make a bunch of changes if it's poor fuel, then backtrack to where we were is all. How often do you go through a tank? Let me know and we will game plan the next move.

Re: Aloha! Just got FlashPro for my 2008 SI, any tips or help?
Thanks for explaining. Nothing on my car changed besides filling up my tank. I always fill up at our local "Minit Stop" gas station which is Hawaii Petroleum gas. Not sure about their quality. I always use their Premium gas in my civic. I'm the only one that drives this car and fills up gas. I usually fill up once a week. I love driving this car :)
I sent the other tuner the 15th revision and the logs with that. All he said was timing is too high for setup in his opinion. I already take most things off the internet with a grain of salt so just relaying information and asking lots of questions to try and learn as much as I can. That's why I really appreciate you breaking things down!
On average I fill up the tank 1-2 times a week. I love driving this car and usually go for a drive if I am bored, can't sleep, frustrated with something, or to just take my mind off of things. I also go on a drive almost every morning when I first wake up as my way of meditating lol.
Thanks again bro!

Also, I am not sure if this changes anything but I figure I let you know just in case it does.
I am changing my oil today. Oil is the same as what I have been using the past 2 oil changes. (Amsoil Signature Series). I also do an engine flush before every oil change with Amsoil's oil flush.
Again, not sure if this will affect anything on your side but at least you will know in case it does.
Thanks!

Re: Aloha! Just got FlashPro for my 2008 SI, any tips or help?
Okay, yeah it's hard to say for certain. Like I mentioned, in my experience when something like this happens it's new fuel. As you know, you always have to look at new variables when something goes wrong. Especially when you've been working on the same car for three weeks, you sort of find a sense of normality for how a car acts. There hasn't been any knock on WOT pulls for quite a while now, and we were knock free in part throttle for a few datalogs now. So when the knock pops up out of the blue, we have to ask questions as to what changed. This is generally fuel from my experience, which is all I can speak to.
So based on your second opinion, I went ahead and pulled a bunch of timing out of it so you can have the peace of mind. You didn't mention him offering to help, or outline where the ignition is too high in his opinion, so I just sort of went off where the knock happened in these last datalogs and pulled some out. If it doesn't feel as strong, then we'll probably just have to roll with it this way so that you can feel comfortable. It's definitely an interesting opinion on his part, the guy that has tuned more than almost anybody on these cars tuned my 8th gen a decade ago with similar if not more ignition on garbage California 91 octane, and I didn't have any knock. But see how it feels now with the ignition, hopefully it feels as strong. It's too bad you can't get a calibration from the other guy, it would be interesting to see his ideas and how he sets things up.
Changing the oil shouldn't cause any issues at all, granted it's full, which I know you will do. Sometimes when the oil goes really low, it can impact the VTC system as it can't create enough pressure to control the cam actuation. But as far as doing a proper oil change, it won't cause any issues at all.
Give this next one a drive when you can. Also keep me in the loop on the next gas fill up so we can watch for any knock reduction or knock issues.

Re: Aloha! Just got FlashPro for my 2008 SI, any tips or help?
Yea I see. All I can say is I give you props for doing this and really appreciate your time. It is not "easy" to just dive in and learn all of this so you have been a HUGE help!
He offered to tune it if I wanted to but I wanted to stick with you since we been going through this process and wanted to just relay the information just in case it helped out any. I really like the feel of the car though and it does feel nice and strong!
And sounds good about the oil. I always make sure I have full oil before driving. I did have to use a shitty plastic washer on my last change and it started leaking from the drain bolt so I was constantly topping off. Got a new bolt and washer, new oil, and a nice filter in there.
I'll keep you in the loop on the next fill up and will let you know how this one feels. I'll go on a similar drive as I feel that knock occurs every single time on the same left hand turn lol.
Thanks again bro!

Re: Aloha! Just got FlashPro for my 2008 SI, any tips or help?
No problem, happy to help. You should have him help you retune using his stuff and see how it goes. It would be interesting to see what his strategies are and what he thinks is the right ignition.
Yeah the washer on these Hondas can be finicky, if you buy factory Honda filters they provide a new washer with the filter. But proper oil level is important since so many things with the engine are controlled by oil pressure.
Just let me know on it all and see how it feels with the reduced ignition.

Dude, car feels great! I got the washer on perfect now, but it was the plastic one I had to use last time and it fell apart and started leaking. I check my oil at least every other time I drive the car so stays good!

Re: Aloha! Just got FlashPro for my 2008 SI, any tips or help?
Glad it feels good in this one. Is this the same tank of gas, or new gas?
Overall it looked great, we had one knock in the first datalog but I don't think it was much to worry about, and the second one didn't have a knock. Go ahead and make another datalog in the next one and we will see how it looks. If the next one shows a knock like this first one, I will make some adjustments. But I don't think it was anything to worry about.
Yeah on the oil changes I would also recommend changing the drain plug after every few oil changes, or at least inspect it each time. If it comes off tough one time, replace it. I'm probably a little cautious because of all my experience with older generations and their being prone to issues. But since you plan to keep the car for a long time, it's good to replace the little things as you go to keep the threads clean and solid.
We will see how the next one looks. We might be there.

Hey, this is the same tank of gas. Glad it looked great! I'll take another datalog today. Thanks for the tip on the oil change and bolt! Excited to hear we might be there! Will get that next one over to you later today. I'll do a bunch of mixed driving to put it through the test haha. Thanks again bro!!
Re: Aloha! Just got FlashPro for my 2008 SI, any tips or help?
Sounds good. Yeah test it out like the previous datalog where we had some knock if you can.

Hey man! Car feels great! I wasn't able to drive for too long. Been busy with work. How are we looking? I didn't look at this datalog so not sure if there were any knocks but I didn't notice the check engine light flash at all! Keeping my fingers crossed, but it drives and feels good!

Re: Aloha! Just got FlashPro for my 2008 SI, any tips or help?
Yeah it all looks great. No knock, and all the trims look great. I would say make one more datalog when you can with some spirited driving just to be sure. It it stays knock free with some of that driving then I say we're good. Make a few third gear pulls like you have been, then make a fourth gear pull or two from 3000-7500 or so. Other than that, it looks great.
