Dialing in my 09 Si Coupe

Post by nboy1337 »

Currently running a map i found in these forums, can tell its not optimal. It pulls alright but some part throttle stuff I'm skeptical about. Anyhow, I have the stock headers, gutted cat, defouler on the secondary, its disabled anyways idk, and Sknuk2 Megapower2 Catback. I also have an SRI, not sure on brand but it's there. That's all the modifications made, the tune I found was for those modifications and is MAF based, I just know it could most definitely be better and I'm still not 100% sure as to what I'm doing yet. Help appreciated!

Do you have any datalogs you can post, and can you post the calibration you’re running?

Most intakes like to be speed density tuned, but some tun good on the MAF. Post up what you can and we can go from there.

Yes. Here's a log with the calibration.

I would need more context on your part throttle concerns and what you mean when you say it's not "optimal". The calibration you're running on is one I built with another member. But I see you made some slight fueling adjustments, made it crackle, raised vtec, among other things.

The tune you're running is not MAF based, it is speed density tuned for his setup. It might be worth trying to do a hybrid calibration where it runs on the MAF for part throttle and the MAP sensor for WOT fueling, especially if you feel like things aren't optimal. Some guys, and setups, like the hybrid calibration over a straight speed density. Could just be that this tune wasn't designed for your setup, though the fueling throughout is pretty good and little knock.

Let me know. Give me some more context on what you're feeling and also why you went with vtec at 5000 so I can understand your thoughts and goals.

Ultimately looking for better fuel economy, but excellent power. I set the VTEC where I did for lower end power, especially for getting up to speed etc. I just didn't know if 12.5 was too rich when getting into VTEC. But if you think the hybrid would work better we can definitely aim for that.

Gotcha, what is your goal for fuel economy and how do you plan to calculate what you're getting?

Tuning to find the right cam angle map and vtec rpm point is the important part to getting you up and going quickly. Your setup is a link unique with the gutted cat and all, so I don't know how how lofty our goals can be simply because I've never had a guy with a gutted cat. Do you have any pictures of the SRI, or something similar you can find online and post? I am curious what you have and how it's set up since you mention you don't know the brand.

This is my intake. For fuel economy, I fill my tank and reset my trip. Once I’m ready to fill up I calculate the mileage vs how many gallons I put back in to fill it. I’m averaging about 25 with some beating in it. But before I was modified I was getting like 28ish. So I figure it’s obviously dumping more fuel wide open and stuff possibly? But just not 100% sure.

How much of city vs highway driving do you do in one tank of gas, and do you plan to monitor that on your drive for each tank to make an apples to apples comparison? I only ask because whenever fuel economy comes up, it always seem like a tough area to reach a customers goals. A decade ago before I got into tuning, I was tuned by a guy who most at the time figured was the best in the business and I only got maybe 22mpg 100% city, driving fairly normal and calm. I'm no magician with the fuel economy as there is only so much I can do on my end to get you to your goal. So depending on your fuel economy goals, and how they are prioritized on your list, I don't know well I can get you to your goal. Original EPA sticker said 23/32 and the updated sticker is 20/29. So if you were doing a lot of highway driving and that got you to 28mpg, then we wouldn't have a problem. If you were doing a majority of city driving and got 28mpg, then you are way ahead of the factory rating. I'd love to help you reach your fuel economy goals, but I also don't want you to be disappointed if we don't. Some tuners might be willing to run you lean to help you reach your goals, but I don't do that unfortunately.

From your datalog it's not rich on the WOT pull. Your fourth gear pull the AFR was around 13.1 which is fine, 12.8 - 13.1 is my goal for e-tunes. The intake you have should work okay on the MAF sensor. That could be worth a shot to help with your driving feel and fuel mileage perhaps.

Anyways, just trying to cover all the basis so I don't waste your time trying to help you and fall short of your goals.

I mean you’re absolutely in no way wasting my time I thank you for your input and your feedback, it’s all very helpful information. I actually do a mix of highway and city, so seeing what you just told me makes me feel good about it. I also realize that since it’s now colder I have to idle it more and that’s probably where my loss is going. Anyhow, if you think this tune looks fairly safe to run, do you think there’s potential for gain?

Yeah it would all depend on your mix of driving, so if one tank you drive on the highway a lot at steady speed your mpg will be much better than a tank where you end up city driving for the majority. That's all I was saying is we would need to make sure we're comparing apples to apples so that you're happy with the mpg, or find some method to get you there.

If you plan to run this setup for while, I would recommend building a custom tune for your car by tuning each cam angle individually and then vlending out the cam angle map using that data. Unless each cam angle is tuned individually, there is really no way to find out the proper cam angle map using the fuel data we tune for your car. Granted a dyno is the best tool for that, but the fuel data closely mimics that which is why I use it for e-tuning. With that said, the proper way to tune these takes about 10-12 revisions to tune all cam angle then blend it all out. We can do it a slightly quicker way, say maybe 6-8 if you need to be done quicker. The long route just gives us more data to choose a vtec rpm and make a proper cam angle map for your car. We can also try to hybrid calibration and a speed density calibration to see if you like one more than the other. We would test that at the end, for the tuning portion I would run you speed density to get all our data and get it dialed. Then we can try one hybrid calibration to see which you like more, there could be some drivability for personal preference you have sitting in the car that I can see.

Anyways, let me know if you can go the long route or if you need it done the shorter route. Since the datalogs need to be 20 minutes in length, the burden of time falls on you which is why I give you a choice. It only takes me a few minutes to make a new revision, the burden of time falls on you with the 20 minute datalogs, so you let me know which works best for you.

The long route sounds fine to me! This is also a good learning experience for me as well so I seriously cannot tell how appreciative I am. But yeah let’s collect some data!

Sounds good. So here is the first one for you, this will be the 0* cam angle with vtec at 4500. For the datalogs, we need them to be 20-30 minutes in length with as much stop and go type driving as possible. On the drive, we need one wide open throttle (WOT) pull from 2500-8600 in third gear. Keep the driving normal and calm for this first one until I get some data. The 0* cam angle is a little sluggish, so don't stress on it not being very powerful, it's just a base starting point to get us going.

Here is the results! Never heard VTEC crack like that before. Twas crazy, I got to about 8300 before I ran up to traffic, I hope that's okay, otherwise tons of stop and gos, and Pennsylvania hills!

Looks really good. Only one knock and the fueling was pretty good for a start. The datalog and driving style was great, keep shooting for that in our datalogs. Yeah vtec on the 0* cam is very noisy but not very powerful, it's weird. Haha. That's cool you're in PA, I was just out there a couple weeks ago visiting friends in New Hampshire and took a little roadtrip down to DC through Wilkes Barre, PA. I found some really nice roads near Minersville and Parkesburg I think it was. I like setting the GPS to "No tolls" and enjoy the backroads.

Here is the next one, we will now move to the 15* cam angle with vtec at 4500 again. Take this one for the same datalog and driving style.

Little more highway in this one, but should still have everything you're looking for. I kept forgetting to actually mention that the vehicle has a Exedy Stage 1 clutch, if that matters at all. But here's the data anyhow. Feelin' good cruising around, I can tell you have the throttle delay on but I don't mind it for drivability purposes. I can tell you're almost making it deal-able with though, if that makes any sense haha. But yeah I used to go to work through Parkesburg all the time, backroads around that area are amazing yeah.
