Problems right before VTEC kickes in

I have been having a problem when I get my car to about 5500 rpm it starts making a odd noise and I lose a lot of power and once the VTEC kickes in it is not much better. I have noticed that the longer I make it go in to the higer rpm's my mil light will flash. It flashes about once a sec and on the data log I have here it was flashed 14 times. It does not happen in 1st gear and I do not thing that it does in 2nd the main problem in when I am in 3-5 and I am goign to pass a car. I can not figure ont what is making this happen please help!!

The A/F shows lean from 5700 rpm upwards. There is some knock sensor activity as well, but not much. The short term fuel trim is high (-15%) at idle. First check that there is no mechanical cause of the 6000 rpm problem (only likely if you have swapped cams) otherwise you need tuning.
