USB Cable connection problem

Post by fastshark »

Just got my K-pro back from Hondata this past Monday, USB connection seems to go off line after no said X time factor. As well as during a datalog. This is the black cable supplied from Hondata. I thought this problem was resolved with the new cables?

Please advise (Hondata).

Are you using a Dell laptop? I've used 2 different ones and they crap out a LOT- the Toshiba I used briefly one day held up very well though- Mark W.

Autometer Boost Gauge
Autometer A/F gauge
60-1 Hifi
EVO wastegate
K-pro w/boost controller
NGK IRR. <confirmed resistored spark plugs>
Extra ground from battery to suggested k-pro grounding; to see if it would help connection matters; no
3" true DP w/SS 3" catback to Apexi N1 Turbo exhaust
XD HID

Dell9600 laptop is what im using with beta kmanager. USB supplied from Hondata is the black cable with ferriates on both ends.

Out off attempting around 20 datalogs from a 3rd WOT to 8000, I've gotten maybe 3-4 datalogs. Nice feature and all...but pointless if I cant use it properly.

Spunkster, i'm assuming you work for Hondata? What is your name? As I spoke with someone there was informed of "many" reason why "might" be happening...odd how people are still having connection problems. Seems like the fix they do is add ferriates <sp> and the problem is gone. Can I get a "new cable" please? As im not about to go over every single wire in my car to confirm proper grounding/connection; since one of the "suggested" reasons might be due to improper wiring. Sorry if I sound bothered by this, but comeon....if this was an isolated issue then fine. But it is not apparently (cough cough clubrsx.com reference).

Can I get this cable?

We've found the common element in all connection problems is the Dell laptop. Most Dells work, but it seems that some will not.

The blue cable has approximately the same impedence as the black cable with ferrites, but fill out this form and we will send a blue cable.

Make sure the main wiring harness gound is to the right location - running an extra wire from the battery is not the same thing.

Make sure the A/F gauge is not connected to the primary o2 in any way.

Put the stock plugs back in to see if that makes any difference.

Just as some extra info for others experiencing connection problems:
I have a Dell Laptop and had USB problems, for instance during datalogging I would surely get disconnected within a couple of minutes.
Diagnosing the problem I replaced the USB cable. No improvement.
Got some ferrites for the USB cable. Again no improvement.
Then I tried a friends laptop. Problem gone.
So it was not the cable, grounding, whatever.
Next I installed a fresh Windows XP on a new partition without any service packs and without the Dell chipset drivers. Meaning only USB 1 functionality, but it worked like a charm.
Updated XP to SP2. Still ok. And finally the Dell USB drivers. No problemo... :o

My conclusion is that it's not the Dell hardware itself. But rather something somewhere in the Dell software. Haven't figured out what and maybe I never will (because for me it works right now)...
But I would strongly advise anyone with a Dell laptop and USB connection problems to first check if the problem goes away if you try another laptop.

so if hondata doesn't want me to call (because there's no official fix to this problem yet) and just fill out an online form, how do i know what's going on? do i get a confirmation email or something? should i just wait? has a blue cable been sent? any input knowing this is going somewhere will help. thanks in advance.

Well, I've always believed in having a common electrical ground. When I datalog, I always have my laptop plugged into my cig lighter with an adapter.
