Please help with new distributor install

Post by brynaninja »

Hey team

I just installed a new distributor on a vehicle with an S300. And Im having problems getting it aligned correctly.
So here goes.
The old distributor started showing cam sensor malfunction. Ok upgrade to a new one and fix it.
The old distributor has marks on it so I can line it up with what the tuner made the calibration at. Fine.
He never checked it before tune. Great.
So when I start up the car, I let it warm up, put the timing light on it. And to get the flash on the 15deg mark the S300 has to have the "set timing" feature set to 0deg.
Not ideal but ok, ran for a long time like this, its tuned right, but to this offset.
Ok sure.....
I install the new dist and I cant turn the dist enough to get it there/cant turn down the S300 to 0deg without it wanting to stall.
Uhm ok.,
So I slowly adjust the S300.
With the S300 on the "set timing" feature, I can turn it to 10BTDC
And then the flywheel and light show its firing at 15BTDC, the 15deg mark on the flywheel.
Sooo.....
How should I trick the computer into getting it to the old dist. setting?
Until the tuner opens up again anyways.
The computers difference between old and new dist is 0deg on old, 10BTDC on new,
Thats the settings to get both to read flywheel at 15BTDC
Im just really confused, any help would be appreciated.
Do I open the "set timing" feature and add 10 deg so its set to 6BTDC rather than the stock setting of 16BTDC?
Kinda choked at the tuner.

Most engines the timing should be set to 16degrees in the set timing window and then use a timing light to get the distributor adjusted accordingly.

If the distributor was installed incorrectly or had the timing improperly set before then you may need to do some retuning in the calibration after properly setting the base timing using the software and a timing light.

If base timing should be set to 16, then you should have 16 set in the software when you set it, and use a timing light to adjust the distributor to match accordingly.

yeah well my car ran fine before this, and all Im trying to do is match the old distributor placement to the new one.
The old setup was 0deg on Smanager is 15BTDC on the fly
The new distributor reads 10BTDC on the Smanager when its 15BTDC on the wheel
so the timing is 10 deg out right?
I should be able to match the new dist to this right?
Cant I just trick it to be 10 deg out by putting It at 6BTDC?

You cannot trick it, you must do it as I have explained.

I understand how to set it properly, but my original calibration is set to this incorrect dist timing.
I cant even get it running good enough to get it to the tuner.
