Check Engine light flashes on and then off and then on

The laptop im using is a compaq and the light remains solid..would the serial to usb connector make this occur? because i am not using a keyspan converter its a different brand

If you are not using a Keyspan USB adapter that may be your problem. We have seen problems using other brands. THe Keyspan also comes with software that allows you to monitor the port and see if it is idle or busy.

I seem to occasionally get the car to run without the cel light turning on but now im having the problem with the warming idle. When i first start the car when its cold the rpms would go up to 1700 for a few secs and then drop down close to my target idle but the engine hasnt warmed up yet. I have tried adjusting the IAC duty cycle but I dont know which direction i should be going in.

Try adjusting it both way in small increments. As coolant temps increase the idle will drop.
